Both the upper and lower palaces of the Belvedere feature museums devoted to Austrian art. In fact, the building itself is a masterpiece of Baroque architecture. The Museum of Austrian Baroque Art displays 17th and 18th century paintings and sculptures. Highlights from the museum include the Hall of Mirrors, a room covered with large, gilt-framed mirrors, and the "Hall of Grotesques" where bizarre paintings inspired by ancient Roman frescoes are displayed.

This Burial Museum offers an interesting glimpse into the Viennese obsession with funeral rituals and objects. The impressive 18th century wrought-iron grill at the entrance depicts a crowned skeleton. Displays include a widow's mourning attire; lanterns, staffs and liveries used by 17th century pall-bearers; a coffin with a bell in the event someone was mistakenly buried alive and re-awakened; and an economy coffin with a trapdoor so that the deceased could be dropped into the grave and the coffin recycled.
